I knew it was only a matter of time before some kook’s words about “god’s vengeance” would surface in relation to the hurricanes this year. Time’s up, apparently.
I was just commenting on a Snopes thread the other day that asked the question “can churches get FEMA funds?” I have no idea, but I don’t think they should. When pressed to justify this opinion, I explained that Joel Osteen’s church is square in the middle of the Harvey disaster and that Joel Osteen preaches that wealth comes to good people so the wealthy are god’s chosen. That is an oversimplification of what is loosely known as the “prosperity gospel” one of Osteen’s go to theologies. Now, if the churches don’t have enough money to fix the damage to their churches from Harvey then they should probably get Joel to front them the cash. Or perhaps they should get to praying about their clearly insufficient piety. Because they were targeted along with all those other sinners. Clearly there is something wrong with their conception of god and god’s will.
